Why Take the GAMSAT?

Those looking to study, and later work, in the field of medicine at Australian, British, and Irish universities should become very familiar with the “gamsat”. Gamsat is an acronym for the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test that was developed as a prerequisite admissions test in 1995. Four Australian universities were the first to create and implement this test and it has since spread to Britain and Ireland. Students looking to enter medical fields such as dentistry, medicine, or veterinary at schools in these countries will need to pay attention to the “gamsat.”

This test is given once a year during the latter part of March and early part of April. Students preparing for the test need to be aware that its primary focus is on the test taker’s ability to reason and apply knowledge gained over a long period of time. This structure avoids having students wait till the last minute for preparation. Although two-thirds of the test covers biology and physics, one-third evaluates a student’s basic proficiency with English. Therefore, students without a bachelor’s degree in science are able to sit for the “gamsat.”

The “gamsat” is one of three typical requirements that graduate medical schools look for with a student’s application. The other two requirements are G.P.A. and attainment of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
